San Antonio Royal Rumble Agreement Sheds Light on WWE’s Venue Exclusivity

WWE recently dropped its legal fight to prevent the release of details regarding negotiations with San Antonio, Texas, for hosting the 2023 Royal Rumble. With the lawsuit withdrawn, the full agreement between WWE and the city has now been made public.

As reported by Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston, the unredacted contract reveals an addendum outlining WWE’s strict exclusivity clauses for the Alamodome, where the event was held. The agreement stipulates that the venue cannot promote or host any other wrestling events for 90 days before and 60 days after the WWE event. Additionally, the clause extends the ban while WWE tickets are on sale, which usually happens well before the 90-day window, effectively increasing the exclusivity period.

Previously, WWE had sued the Texas Attorney General to keep the terms of the agreement confidential, arguing that it contained “trade secrets” after Wrestlenomics had requested the information.

Currently, WWE is facing more significant legal concerns. The company, alongside former chairman Vince McMahon and former talent relations head John Laurinaitis, has been named in a civil suit filed by former legal assistant Janel Grant. Grant alleges emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse, harassment, and sex trafficking by McMahon and Laurinaitis. The civil suit is on hold as federal authorities investigate potential criminal charges related to her claims.
